WHAT IS REINING?
One of the most frequently asked questions is
"What
is Reining"?
Reining is a competitive equestrian event designed to showcase the maneuvers of a working ranch horse.
Reining is a judged competition that highlights the athletic ability of a horse through the performance of seven or eight
required maneuvers including small slow circles, large fast circles, flying lead changes, roll backs over the hocks, 360 degree
spins, and exciting sliding stops that are the hallmark of the reining horse. Dubbed ‘Western Dressage’, this variety of manuevers
is linked into a graceful sequence with no observable resistance on the horse's part.
Reining is the fastest growing
sport in the equine industry today. The National Reining Horse Association (NRHA) has flourished over the past 12 years. From
1992 to 2006, NRHA membership grew over 300% and the number of approved shows more than tripled. The annual purses have grown
dramatically as well. In 1992, a total of 1.3 million dollars was paid out in NRHA competition purses. By 2004, this figure
had mushroomed to over 7.4 million dollars. In 1998 Reining became the first Western Discipline and the sixth Equestrian Discipline
overall to be approved by the United States Equestrian Team.
Reining is quickly gaining popularity not only in the
USA but throughout the world. In 2000, reining became the first Western Discipline to be approved by the Fédération Equestre
Internationale (FEI) and became a full medal discipline at the 2002 World Equestrian Games in Jerez, Spain. Reining was demonstrated
at the Olympics in Sydney, Australia and is being considered as a full-fledged Olympic sport for the summer Olympics in 2008
or 2012.

FAIR
MARKET VALUE
Another question that we are asked quite often is: "What Determines The 'FAIR MARKET VALUE'
For A Performance Horse?"
This is a complex question, however the first point that must be made is that the
AQHA and APHA Performance Horse Market (Reiners, Cow Horses, Cutters) is a very mature and established market. When a horse
has a very low price on it or a very high price, there are always reasons--some apparent and some not so apparent. A cheap
price usually turns out NOT to be a bargain. Now with that said here are the factors that determine what the price should
be for any given performance horse:
SOUNDNESS AND PHYSICAL CONDITION This is the single most important quality.
Without being sound and in good physical condition, the other qualities are meanlingless.
BLOODLINES Pedigrees
indicate what the breed is naturally inclined to do. Examine both the top and bottom of the pedigree. This combination represents
a composite of both the sire and the dam. A proven and successful line has the tendancy to repeat and produce its dominant
traits. You should be able to see the best features of both parents in the offspring. Learn as much as you can about the
bloodlines; what did the sire and dam and siblings accomplish, what were they know for, and what were their weaknesses, if
any. This will give you an idea of the potential of the individual horse your are considering.
COMPETITION RECORD Competition success of the parents and the siblings indicate a horse's potential ability to perform a given competitive
event better than others. Do the judges know and like the bloodlines. If the parents and the siblings are accomplished,
its a good bet the individual horse will also do well in the same or similar competition events.
WHO CAN SUCCESSFULLY
SHOW THE HORSE Horses that can be shown successfully by Youths, Amateurs, Non-Pros as well as Professional riders are
usually worth more than a horse that only one level of rider can show successfully. Some of the best AQHA and APHA performance
horses started their careers being shown in the open classes by professionals, then successfully moved into the non-pro/amatuer
classes and are now being shown by youth competitors.
FUTURE COMPETITION POTENTIAL Does the horse have many
years of competition life remaining or is he "all used up" and future competition success is doubtful.
BREEDING POTENTIAL After it completes its competition life, does it have a high probability of being good breeding
stock. This is one of the reasons why mares and stallions are usually worth much more than geldings.
LEVEL AND
QUALITY OF TRAINING The value is usually increased if the horse was trained by top professionals in their respective
fields.
APPEARANCE AND CONFORMATION The AQHA and APHA have a set of conformation standards that make up the
ideal conformation for the breed in general and for the type of performance events it will compete in specifically. Good
conformation leads to fewer soundness issues, as well as improved athletic ability. Appearance is tightly linked to conformation
but is much more subjective. However, everthing else being equal, a unique color, a pretty head, or bold and flashy markings
usually increase the value and price paid.
DISPOSITION AND TRAINABILITY Temperment and disposition link directly
to the trainability of the horse. Horses with a positive attitude, good work ethic and a willingness to learn are worth more.
Much of this goes directly back to the pedigree.
In addition to the foregoing considerations, Three Colts West
maintains an extensive database of the actual selling prices of Performance Horses sold at the major NCHA, NRHA and NRCHA
sales throughout the year. And we work closely with the pedigree research services. All of these elements are carefully considered
as we implement a proven methodology to determine the “fair market value” and in-turn establish the prices for
the Performance Horses we offer for sale.
We hope the foregoing will help you to better understand the business
side of this question and why and how our horses are priced accordingly.
